What is Pearl Millet?
Pearl Millet is one of the oldest cultivated crops since pre-historic times and ranks as the sixth most important grain in the world. It is known as Bajra in Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Urdu, and Oriya; Kamboo in Tamil and Malyalam; Sajjalu in Telugu, and Bajri in Marathi and Gujarati. It is a cereal crop grown at a very large scale in India and in Africa.
I bet you thought Omahangu was only grown in Africa din't you? Well...I won't be surprised even if you thought that maybe it's only this amazing crops is only cultivated in Namibia. I thought so too at some point.
The seeds or the grains of this amazing crops are small, round, and golden yellow or grey. It is usually used for hay, pasture, seed crops, and food. It always grows rapidly and is perfectly adapted for growing in harsh arid climates with drought-prone regions which is quiet perfect for the countries it grows in.
Africa and Asia has poor acidic medium of soil, which is usually highly unsuitable for wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, and barley. Pearl millet grows better than other cereals. In India, pearl Millet is commonly used as a major cereal in the states of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

In Namibia
Home to the Oshiwambo-speaking people, northern Namibia has its own distinctive character. With it's wide empty oshanas that come to brim with water in the rainy seasons, It's abundance of beautiful palm trees that blow a relaxing breeze and adding a beautiful image to the whole place. The sound of the birds are heard every where as you travel through the villages, and the classic beauty of the homesteads built with strong woods, giving a beautiful earthly look to the villages. Ever green when it is raining season and everything comes to life then. You will naturally pass goats, castles, donkey and maybe some horses if you are fortunate as you travel from small towns and villages, most villagers farm goats and castles and donkeys.
Now they usually use Donkeys or castles for ploughing this great pearl millet crops that is the focus of our topic today. the northern part of Namibia is the great place to escape if one really want to experience the full blessing of the steely heaven at night, the beautiful galaxy vividly displayed at night. Daily life is shaped around what is transpiring in the fields at different times of the year, and the family’s meals revolve around the nutritious staple.
Pearl millet are cereals, belonging to the grass family –Cereals such as pearl millet, and Gramineae – have been around for aeons becoming staple diets of people worldwide and an integral part of human life. Sowing and reaping are cultural rituals that have been woven into the fabric of communal life.

Tranditionally mahangu/pear millet seeds are planted on raised ground that has been tilled with a hoe or a tractor and fertilised with dung and ash, preventing them being washed away in floods and serving to drain salt from the soil. It is usually harvested, by breaking off the heads by hand (or with a knife), collecting them in baskets and taking them to the threshing floor. They are threshed with sticks or the thick end of pestles traditionally although now many have resorted to tractors as it is much faster. The threshed grain is winnowed in flat baskets with a deft tilt of the hand to remove the chaff. It is then pounded in wooden mortars to make flour.

Usually the mortars are sunk into the ground, but free-standing mortars are also being used now. Traditionally, the floor of the pounding area was made from the clay of termite mounds, and hence the flour, slightly gritty, and making it suitable to make porridge. For storage, In namibia ,large grain baskets are used, called omaanda in the OshiKwanyama language (or eeshisha in OshiNdonga). The granary baskets are woven from mopane twine and lined with clay to protect the precious food-source from insects, rodents and moisture. They are placed on wooden poles and a hut is placed over them to protect the contents from rain.
The flour is used to make a slightly stiff and soft porridge, oshifima, undoubtedly the most important food in the north. It is eaten with a variety of dishes such as chicken, meat, wild spinach, beans, mopane worms or fish. A popular fermented beverage, oshikundu (or ontaku), is also made from the mahangu flour. The stalks of the plants are used to feed cattle, thatch roofs.
Now as for me, whenever I eat something or before I even think of buying something to eat, I ask myself, What is in it for me? what do I benefit from it? That question is always on my mind. I have been wondering what are the benefits of pear millet because as I get more and more health conscious the more I wonder about certain food.

Nutritional Importance of Pearl Millet?

Gluten-free
Wheat is the most abundantly consumed cereal in the world along with rice and corn, but it contains gluten, which is a protein that causes gastrointestinal problems like bloating, flatulence, and irritable bowel syndrome. Recipe using Pearl Millet
The recipes using pearl millet range from breakfast, porridge's to flat breads, chappatis, dosa and even desserts.
Pearl Millet Khichdi
Ingredients:
Pearl millets - 100 grams
Beans- 50 grams
Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
Turmeric powder- 1/4 teaspoon
Mustard seeds- 1/4 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Red chilly powder- 1/2 teaspoon
Ground nut- 1/2 cup
Ginger garlic paste- 1 tablespoon
Chopped onion - 1
Sesame oil - 2 tablespoon
Preparation:
Soak pearl millets one hour prior to the cooking.
Heat sesame seed oil in pan and sauté the onion, groundnuts and ginger garlic paste.
Add the spices to taste and stir till the mixture is cooked.
Add pearl millets and beans and water as per the desired consistency. Cook for fifteen minutes and serve hot.

Harmful Effects of Pearl Millet
Pearl millet has goitrogens, these agents might suppress the activity of thyroid gland and cause goiter, which manifests as a noticeable swelling in the front of neck due to the enlargement of thyroid gland.
